 Just joined the project...

Hi,

Phew, at first I thought I was going insane when both the perl as well as the PHP scripts kept returning errors, but the mail I got about a little bug in the script explained it all.

I've set up 4 honeypots successfully so far (on various domains, in various TLD's) and donated one MX entry. I just want to make sure that it's OK to set up a honeypot on a domain that serves as an MX as well?

Allow me to explain :

I donated an MX such as mailserver.domainname.extention

I set up a honeypot on domainname.extention

And mailserver.domainname.extention only contains some info about a non existing mailserver - in case the spammers decide to check if something lives there. There is no honeypot there though.

Hope this doesn't cause any trouble, and I might be setting up more pots and possibly have more MX's to donate as well. Lets first see how successfull these ones are :)

ServMe.

Sorry for the snafu today with the Perl scripts. Not knowing Wired was going to run an article we pushed an under-tested new version up to our live servers. One forgotten new line character (\n) caused a problem for anyone trying to install it. There's nothing worse that installing something, following all the directions exactly, and having it still not work. Everyone on the Project truly apologizes for any inconvience that was caused.

Good news it that 1) it's fixed now and looks like it's working great, and 2) we've released a couple new versions of the script (mod_perl and Python). We'll be rolling out a few more versions (ASP and ASP.NET) in the next week or so. Also looks like we may have some folks interested in helping with Cold Fusion and JSP, so anyone waiting for those may not have too much longer to wait.

Thanks for putting up with our bugs!
