 nslookup errors
Author: S.Hooker   (5 Nov 09 11:01am)
I'm looking at writing my own plug in for UserLand Frontier and need to look up domains to see if they should be allowed into my websites.

When I do a nslookup of abcdefghijk.2.1.9.127.dnsbl.httpbl.orgI get an error, "Non existent domain" I'm using my regular ISP's nameserver I've also tried OpenDNS.

I expected a result back that looked like a domain. Am I using the wrong server?

NXDOMAIN is a valid reply if the IP isn't on our lists.

You are not doing anything wrong. It's just that 127.9.1.2 is not listed.

Try:

abcdefghijk.7.1.1.127.dnsbl.httpbl.org

You should get:

;; ANSWER SECTION:
wzqttkaewirj.7.1.1.127.dnsbl.httpbl.org. 21318 IN A 127.1.1.7

I see how that's confusing in the API document. We'll either change the document or add an test entry to http:BL to make that clearer. Sorry for the confusion.

Test entry will be added in the next release (tonight). Answer section will then contain:

127.3.5.1

Ah! If I get an error, it's because you've never heard of the IP and they're probably good people :-)

abcdefghikj.7.1.1.127.dnsbl.httpbl.org

Does indeed work, gives me an reply of 127.1.1.7

But abcdefghijk.1.5.3.127.dnsbl.httpbl.org

Gives me an error. I'll run through the suspicious IPs I have and see what happens.

BTW: took me a while to find you people, glad I have. This sounds ideal.
