Newbie help for my free physics textbook site

I distribute for free a physics textbook in pdf format. It is 100 MB in size,
and if I do not keep bots out, they will soon hit my webserver data limit.
That means that I want to keep bots out.

My server allows php scripts. I am not an expert in php. I always thought
php are script files.

I downloaded httpbl, but the installation says to edit files which
are not in the download. Obviously I misunderstood something.

Can anybody drop a line? Thank you in advance!

Another issue is that search engines will also crawl through your site.
Look up *** robots.txt *** to find out how to use it to tell search engines to not look at some parts of your site.
Perhaps you should look at having your textbook hosted somewhere else?
