 Submitting Known Spammer IP's
Author: J.Dahl   (14 Jul 07 1:19am)
Why is it not possible for members to submit known IP's of spammers? Several forums I help run have fairly large data bases of IP's and email addresses of known spammers. Wouldn't this benefit this project?

Hi

I also have a list of confirmed Comment Spam IP's that have been atacking my CMS- and commerce systems, how do I get this list to Project Honey Pot for evaluation...?

Maby it would be worth it to consider a "possible suspect" category in your database..?!

I wish we had an answer for this.

I use Pivot for my blog, which has excellent safeguards against comment and trackback spam... so effective that I haven't had EVEN ONE single spam in the months since I enabled those safeguards. However, in the process Pivot dutifully logs every single failed attempt WITH FULL DETAILS.

It seems to me that there ought to be some way to transmit these logs, or perhaps even each event in realtime as it happens, to Project HoneyPot for verification. The ideal, of course, would be for Pivot itself to report flagged spam events when they happen, using some API similar to http:BL.

I suspect that Pivot's authors or supporters would quickly implement such a feature if it were made available. They've already implemented code to simplify inclusion of honeypot links and use of http:BL to forbid access to known spammers.

We would be thrilled to work with someone who has another large source of data, like Pivot. I'd be a bit more hesitant to work with a number of individual Pivot users individually since the possibility for data corruption is higher. Anyone know some of the Pivot developers and whether they'd really be happy to share data with us?

You can meet the Pivot devs yourself @ http://pivotlog.net (or forum.pivotlog.net). The Pivot developers don't have access to the spam logs of individual Pivot users, though, so the option of receiving spam data from them is moot. The logs are never transmitted to them or anywhere else. Even if that were coded, since Pivot is open source it would be easy for someone to re-code it or pollute his own spam log, if he was so inspired. It would necessitate some sort of internal encryption of the data, to prevent direct access to it by the blog owner, which might be viewed as contrary to its open source status. And again, since it's open source there's nothing stopping a talented and motivated spammer from tweaking it to his benefit.

Given all that, forget I even suggested it.... :-(
