How long does it take ?
Author: G.I2   (19 Aug 07 7:50am)
I installed a honeypot on my site about 1 month ago, and to date there are no stats even though the incidence of spam to my email has more than doubled. I have tried to block some of these spammers via htaccess but the more IP addresses I block, it seems, the worse it gets. They just keep coming back with another IP address. This really makes me think that we are fighting a losing battle, since I joined Project Honeypot, my spam has increased, and I am wondering if this scheme is making any progress. I assumed that if I installed a honeypot, at the very least, it would scare off some of these spammers, but hell no, it seems that it riles them and they are bombarding me with spam daily.

Ok, rant over !

My question is, how long does it take to start receiving stats so that I can put some of this data to good use? I cannot just keep blocking IP addresses and even ranges of IP addresses unless I know for sure who it is that is hitting on me. I had one government directory ask me if my site was still up. I had inadertantly blocked the directory when a blocked a range of addresses. OOP's

Any replies/advice is always appreciated

If you have installed the honey pot correctly you should at least begin to see traffic to it fairly quickly. The most common mistake people make is installing the software but then not linking to it from all your web pages. If you don't link to the software from the web pages, there is no way that bad robots (harvesters, comment spammers, etc...) will run across it.

Remember also that the honey pot script will not block bad bots from accessing your site, it will only track the ones that do. If you want to stop them from getting access in the first place, you should look into our http:BL service.

Is it in a way helpful or even advisable to submit the honeypot (link) also "directly" to a search engine or rather not?

TIA

It took only a few days 2 or 3 to catch 2 harvester after I installed a honypot on my blog which is not very known without many indexed sites but several years old. So, I think the age of a website and of course the way to link to your honeypot is important.I use some of my other sites to link to my blog and pot there.

Hi again and thank you for the replies

I just finished replying to this same thread and hit the preview button and my post disappeared, so I had to re-post, not sure what happened to my last post but I had to re-login to post again.

I am quite certain that the software is installed correctly and that the links are installed in all pages via include pages and footer pages in the ecommerce part of the site. I have uploaded a transparent image to my images folder and am linking to it via the link example you provided.

As far as the http:BL service is concerned, I am not sure how this system works, my site is hosted, and I was under the impression that http:BL service needed to be installed on the server. Do I need to have this installed by my hosting provider or is there a way that I can install it on my site? I find the FAQ's a little confusing.

Is IP monitoring only for hosting providers or is it available to all members? Again, the FAQ's are a little confusing.

I think what we need here is a much more detailed tutorial for these services for newbies.

Always appreciative of any comments / advice / assistance.

I believe you don´t need to create transparent images and you can use http:BL without help from your provider. Search the forums I think there you´ll find some more information about http:BL.
I´m using just a plugin for my hosted site http:BL for wordpress and the installation was a simple thing took only a few minutes and it works.

Thanks K for your reply

I will check out the the other forum threads for http:BL info.

It just so happens that yesterday or the day before I got my first stats so that really sparked me up a little. Its good to know that sometimes each one of us can make a difference in this ongoing battle against these low-life's.

I am still recieving spam, so http:BL looks like my next step as soon as I can work out how to implement it.

Thanks once again for everyones replies.
