 Hosts or domains?
Author: C.Pettinger   (24 Nov 04 6:06pm)
Are we registering hosts or domains? This is, can we create two entries for two hosts on the same domain?
Is
http://stinky.poo.com
different than
http://www.poo.com ?

Would there be any benefit to setting these up as two separate entries, even if we could? Even if these were two distict sites, I could still put links to the "stinky" honeypage in the content of the "www" pages, correct?

In both donating MX records and installing honey pots the Project treats:

stinky.poo.com

as different from:

www.poo.com

In terms of donating MX entries this means that you can have regular mail coming to:

john.doe@mail.poo.com

And donate to the Project:

stinky.poo.com

And your regular mail will not be affected.

In terms of honey pots, we treat stinky and www differently again. The reason why is because some sites house different users' sites under different thirdlevel domains. For example:

bobsblog.livejournal.com
joesblog.livejournal.com

Those two sites may want to install their own honey pots and track their statistics independently. However, if bobsblog.livejournal.com installs a honey pot, joesblog.livejournal.com, or any other site, can include a link to the bobsblog honey pot.

Harvesters generally do not provide a referrer or, if they do, it is often forged. As a result, we can't tell reliably where a harvester came from before it got to the honey pot. Therefore even if we cared to limit links to the honey pots to the sites that installed them we couldn't. And, by the way, we don't care. In fact, the more links that may attract harvesters the better!

Hopefully that answers your question.
