 Looking for SW to block harvesting spiders
Author: S.Orr   (22 Jan 05 11:18pm)
I attended the spam symposium yesterday @ MIT. So today I installed the honeypot.

But what I was curious about was software that was mentioned at the Project Honey Pot presentation which blocks spiders from known harvesters. I'm not seeing it here. Can someone tell me where to find it?

Thanks

We're working it. It's going to be called the http:BL. The software will allow you to either block or restrict the activity of spam harvesters on your site. For example, you could choose to strip out all the email addresses on your web pages if a known harvester is visiting, or maybe require harvesters to pass through a CAPTCHA page. We hope it will be a very extensible architecture that people can add features to in order to suit their particular needs.

Our goal is to make it completely free to anyone who is a participant in Project Honey Pot. That means, as far as I'm concerned, if you have installed a honey pot, donated an MX, or even just referred a number of people to us, you can use the tool for free to protect your site. The philosophy is that anyone who is willing to contribute data into the system, should be allowed to gain the benefit of the system.

If we can meet our development schedules we'll have an early test version of it up and running in the next two months. Anyone who is interested in helping code the modules or plugins for Apache, IIS, or other platforms, please contact us as we need all the help we can get. Also, if you're interested in testing some of the "alpha," configurations, get in touch with us as we'll make them available to you.

We'll post information on the Project Honey Pot website as well as on the software's own site:

http://www.httpbl.org/

Thanks for your interest, and welcome to the Project!

Hi,

I'm working on some honeypots that measure the performance of email obfuscation techniques. Would it be possible to use httpbl to identify an email harvester?

thanks

daVe =P

P.s. if the software does not interfere with my own honeypots I'd be glad to alpha test it.
