http:BL - Known spammer are not detected
Author: D.Einecke2   (9 Mar 13 8:22am)
Hi!

The http:BL API gives me the response that the IP 31.31.117.43 is okay. But this IP has an entry -> http://www.projecthoneypot.org/ip_31.31.117.43

Is the http:BL API not working correctly?

Dirk

Your implementation of http:BL gives you "OK" in what regard?

when I use http:BL to check that IP I get the following

Results: 1 days 30 score Suspicious Comment Spammer 31.31.117.43

which agrees with http://www.projecthoneypot.org/ip_31.31.117.43

How did you make the call to http:BL? With no information, I'm guessing that you should check the settings of the anti-spam add-on for your forum/blog to see what the HP treat level setting is.

Without any real information about your application, it is hard to really tell what is going on or help you fix any issues.

Well come to the forum.

Hi,

I faced the same issue as D.Einecke 2 or 3 months ago, using http:BL module on Drupal 7.

I'm using PHP directly and receive back 127.20.32.5.

This indicates activity in the last 20 days?, threat rating of 32, and type 5 (don't remember what 5 is, I think it's like Suspicious 1 + something else at 4 = 5).

This mostly matches up with the page http://www.projecthoneypot.org/ip_31.31.117.43

Apologies for commenting on an oldish post, but I'm having the same issue as well, take this guy for example:

http://www.projecthoneypot.org/ip_161.69.99.11

Is there a delay before ip's appear in HTTPBL?

Thanks

When I check 161.69.99.11 I see that their threat level is 27.

I assume you have used one of the available plug-ins. Somewhere in the settings for the plug-in there should be an option to set the threat level. The default may be set to 30 or 40 in which case any IP with a lower level, like 27, will not be blocked. On the other hand you don't want to set the threshold to low or you may start blocking some valid posters.

Hop this helps.

Hmm, I'm literally just pinging or tracert'ing the correct path

C:\Users\Ian>ping api-key.11.99.69.161.dnsbl.httpbl.org
Ping request could not find host api-key.11.99.69.161.dnsbl.httpbl.org. Please check the name and try again.

Thanks for the suggestion though :)

Perhaps from the unix command line you should try DIG or NSLOOKUP instead of a ping.

Still no joy, not even with any online tools I try. A low level ping should work, as the DNS should resolve that path. Unless my API key is restricted in some way?

What module/application/process are you using, so I could try that? Bear in mind I'm doing Windows development :)

Thanks again for your help,
Cheers

I found the examples to focused for specific applications/implementations so I wrote my own php function. You pass the function an IP and it returns a 5 element array: block true/false, the 3 octets decoded, and the ip.

I patched a call to that function into phpBB which just looks at the first element to block registration/login or not. I also use it to check the ip of general comment on the website or joining the mailing list. In those cases the info is included with their comment for my information.

Also have a simple test utility so I can enter an IP and display the decoded results on the screen. Nothing elegant but would share if the php would be useful.
