Install problem with Tripod web hosting provider

I uploaded the .cgi file to my cgi-bin directory. According to Tripod's helpfiles:

"Tripod's CGI server assumes that any file with a .pl or .cgi file extension has executable permissions. This means you do not have to change any script permissions. Since Tripod does not allow Telnet access, you wouldn't be able to change permissions anyway. "

...and...

"The CGI server directs your Perl scripts to the proper source for Perl on Tripod. Normally, you have to put a header at the top of your Perl scripts (something like "#!/usr/bin/perl"). There's no need to do that on Tripod. "

As it currently stands, when I try to access the script without modifying the header line, I receive the following error log:

"Can't locate strict.pm in @INC (@INC contains: . / /lib /site_perl) at cobblers.cgi line 38.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at cobblers.cgi line 38.
Can't locate WebPub/Database/Informix.pm in @INC (@INC contains: . / /lib /site_perl) at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/WebPub/Database.pm line 53.
END failed--call queue aborted."

Soooo, will changing or deleting the header info help? Or am I totally fubarred? Any suggestions are welcome-- keeping in mind that I am not in the least Unix-literate.

Unfortunately, I think you're "fubarred." Even if you can get the script to load without the libraries, we've had users try and install on Tripod before and the site has refused to allow outbound connections from their servers (somewhat ironically, in order to avoid spammers using them to send messages). Because outbound connections aren't allowed, the honey pot script cannot contact our servers in order to request a unique email address to display. There's no way around this.

.....unless, enough Tripod users write to the service's admins and suggest that they build in support for Project Honey Pot. They may even be able to do it in such a way that would make it extremely easy for anyone publishing a Tripod site to also include a honey pot. We'd be happy to work with them, so if anyone has their ear......

Sorry to not have a better answer for you. Thanks for your interest in the Project!

My guess is that I'm doubly fubarred-- because I also maintain a site on Yahoo's web hosting service, and they state:

"You will not be able to change the file permissions of any of your files to make them executable. Perl scripts are indicated by the ".pl" file extension and do not need to be made executable in order to be run. "

So I guess that leaves me out...

You're probably doubly fubarred as I'd imagine Yahoo will lock their servers down pretty tight too, but not because of the file extension. We relaxed the rules somewhat and you can change the file extension on Perl files from .cgi to .pl without triggering an error. Again, Yahoo may still make it impossible, but give it a try and let us know what happens.

No joy. I changed the file extension to .pl, uploaded the script and received a 403 error when I tried to access it. <Sigh> End of the line, I guess.
