Installing Honey Pots

 Want to be sure I udnerstand terms of use

If I install a honeypot (or quicklink) or similar, I am no longer allowed to run any website analysis, link checker etc. software on my own website since that would constitute a query? correct? That would be a breach of terms, right? (I do understand the reasoning, just a bit unfortunate)

Okay, well. I think there is a major problem here.

1)
You can't use an access key without having a honey pot?

2)
If you have a honeypot you risk (although probably unlikely since I don't see any "damages done") a civil lawsuit if you run link checker software if I read the terms of service correctly? (I do acknowledge that running a link checker would probably get your own IP blacklisted which would be kinda unfortunate)



Possible solutions:

1)
Set up honeypot on a site I don't care about to ever link check or similar?

2)
Other?

With the proper tools there is no problem. I have honey pots installed on all the domains I control and links to the honeypots and quicklinks on most web pages I build. I also use the CSE HTML Validator, http://www.htmlvalidator.com/CSEForum/index.php to check coding. The validator includes a link checker with the capability to exclude selected links. Works fine.

If your link checker can not be setup to exclude some links, you could use the trick of putting the link to your honeypot or quicklink inside a comment.

A link checker only completes the first step necessary to get your IP address blacklisted. It does follow the quicklink to make sure a 200 is returned from the server. And yes that is reported and counted. That is how I realized that my link checker was following my quicklinks.

However, to be identified as a harvester or blacklisted, the email address on the page visited must be used. Of course the link checker does non of that.

Useful spiders or web crawlers like google or yahoo will respect robot.txt so that can also be used.

Okay, that is good news. But alone the concept of run automated queries against your own website is against the terms of use

You shall not, and shall not authorize, encourage or instruct any third party to: (i) directly or indirectly generate queries, visits to, impressions of or clicks on any Website pages displaying Honey Pots through any automated,

the use of robots or other automated query tools;
"

So basicly you are not allowed to run any link checker, sitemapper, or whatever against your own website if it has links to honeypots... At least e.g. the SMF plugins I have seen do not tell you where honeypots are placed so....

As I said the link checker I use has the ability to exclude all the honey pots/quicklinks included in the files I check. By adding Disallow: honeypot/quicklink lines in my robot.txt files the sitemap tools I use also do not follow those links. In fact by putting the links in the robot.txt file I am overtly NOT "encourage or instruct any third party to: (i) directly or indirectly generate queries, visits to, impressions of or clicks on any Website pages displaying Honey Pots"

All well behaved automated tools not follow the links if "Disallow" in the robot.txt file.

Okay, so we agree that the terms of service from the context/area I quote is *not about following/visiting the links in honeypots*... It's about crawling your *own* pages that contain a honeypots...

But what about e.g. a SMF plugins where the honeypot could be placed on the front main page (although there is a setting to avoid that in the plugin I have seen) ... The point is that I no idea of where the honey pots will be placed when using plugins at least.
