 "Unable to contact the server"

I just threw up the php script and CHModded it as indicated, but I keep getting the message "Unable to contact the server". Is there a problem with the projecthoneypot server, or do you think I'm doing something wrong?

Just confirmed that Project Honey Pot servers are all up and running and have been all day without a hitch. I also checked a number of honey pots we've installed as well as honey pots on 3rd party sites and they all seem to be connecting without a problem.

Do you know if there's anything on your network that would prevent outbound requests from your server? Maybe something at your router?

Also, if you can, let us know what version of PHP you're running and what platform it is running on. It could be your version doesn't support the function the script uses for outbound requests. The script should work with PHP4+, and may work with some configurations of PHP3.

Sorry for the trouble. Hopefully we can get it straightened out.

I'm running version 4.3.9 of PHP on an Apache server, and I'm hosted with Bluehost.com, and I've never had any trouble - I can't imagine that they'd be preventing outgoing requests of that sort. I'm at a loss.

Perhaps php have no sock support compiled in... check phpinfo();

I just checked. Socket support is enabled. I'm truly baffled. Do you think re-downloading would help at all?

I downloaded and tried installing an exact replica of your script on one of our PHP machines. The script was was able to connect to the server, so I don't think the problem is internal to the particular version of the script you downloaded. As a result, I'm skeptical that downloading a new copy of the script will solve the problem. Certainly can't hurt, but I fear the problem involves your server's configuration and is likely something that's going to be trickier to find.

One thing you could try, assuming you have Perl running on your server, is deleting your current honey pot and installing a Perl version of the script. If that version connects then there is likely something misfiring within your PHP installation. If the Perl version also does not connect then potentially something is blocking outgoing requests from the box, or maybe there's a lower-level OS problem.

We'll keep thinking of what else could be causing this problem with your installation. Let us know if anything works to fix it so we can pass it along to anyone who may face a similar issue going forward. Sorry for the trouble!

I am having the same problem. Installed the PHP script on my server. When I try to access it, it says "Unable to contact the server." :(

Maybe the host blocks connections to outside their domain?

I've been trying to install a honey pot on my web page. I've been experiencing some trouble dealing with a couple issues...

I'm forced to use a different machine from our webserver for cgi scripting. The web server is huey.udel.edu and the cgi server is cgi.eecis.udel.edu (our sysadmins don't like to let people run cgi scripts out of their main accounts - they have an isolated system in case someone's script gets naughty).

I'm unable to register a pot for cgi.eecis.udel.edu (get complaints of DNS badness). So I tried huey.udel.edu. I can't get output from the bot when trying to load the page. The page is http://cgi.eecis.udel.edu/~jochen/cgi-bin/mail.cgi (I'm thinking this makes sense since I probably need to register the machine the pot is actually running on). The permissions for the pearl script are world readable/executable. Is there any way for me to put a honey pot up on the cgi machine?

The tail of the cgi logs (with -w passed to pearl) is:
Use of uninitialized value in substitution (s///) at mail.cgi line 337.
Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.) or string at mail.cgi line 260.

<br>Unable to contact the server...<br>

<br>Unable to contact the server...<br>

Also, I have to edit the path to perl in the script. I hope that doesn't invalidate the MD5 tags?

I appreciate any help you can offer; I'd really like to contribute. -mike
