 Honeypot - No visibile e-mail
Author: D.Besnette   (9 Oct 07 4:09pm)
Ok, I'm sure this question has been asked before but I am not finding the answer so I apologize -

I just installed my honeypot - and all of the great "random text'"appears. I know that it says that an e-mail address won't be visible on the page, which is correct - none on mine

So how does this project honey pot catch spammers if there isn't an e-mail address on the page?

Thanks!

The email addresses and other trap elements are formatted in such a way to be hidden from most browsers. They are, however, rendered to harvesters and other malicious online robots. There are a number of different ways we do this. One, for example, is to use Javascript to hide elements on the page. Since most people have Javascript turned on, when they go to the page the elements are hidden from them. Robots typically do not parse Javascript, so they see the spam trap addresses.

If you view the source of the page you'll see more of what is going on.

Oops. My bad. We actually had a bug in the way we were passing back data to the ColdFusion scripts which prevented them from displaying spamtrap addresses. It's fixed now.

Sorry for the confusion.
