 Links to HoneyPot
Author: C.Combs   (16 Jan 05 9:49pm)
Sorry for this basic question ... I thought I had saved the list of suggested HTML links to drive harvesters to the honeypot page, but I cannot find them. Could you please give me a link to that list of links?

Thanks, I owe you a subpoena or two for sure ;)

No worries, happy to help.

After you've installed a honey pot and activated it you can always see the suggested linking instructions by visiting the Manage Honey Pots page, clicking on the domain of the honey pot you want to link to, then clicking Linking Instructions in the left-hand menu. You can copy and paste the linking formats from that page, or use them as general guidelines to create links that are invisible to humans but will be followed by spambots.

In your case, the URL of the linking instructions for the honey pot you've installed is:

http://www.projecthoneypot.org/linking_instructions.php?hpid=40477

You should be able to copy and paste that and go right to the page you're looking for.

Hello!

Can i give the link to my Honey pot -script to other people, for them to put on their websites? Some people are not allowed to run cgi- skripts on their sites?

Anyways, good work guys!

Yeah, that'd be great. The more way harvesters can get to the honey pots, the better!

Again, the only downside is that the statistics will be merged, but if you mark your honey pot as "public" then even your friend can check in and view the statistics for the harvesters that have been caught. If you can, encourage them to use one of the recommended formats so the links will be invisible to humans. This helps us limit the rosk of "false positives" from careless human browsers.

Thanks for your help with the Project!

If this is what you suggest, I will of course do so. But what is the
harm if a real person clicks the Honey pot -link? If this careless
human doesn't send any mail to the generated address?

(BTW, What are the "recommended formats", I couldn't find
them on this site?)

There's no harm if someone just visits a honey pot. We don't mark an IP address as belonging to a harvester unless two things happen: 1) the IP address visits a honey pot, and 2) the email address that was handed out there subsequently begins receiving messages. It's extremely unlikely that someone could just "stumble" into getting listed.

To find the linking instructions, visit your Manage Honey Pots page. Click on the domain of an active honey pot you want to link to. Then, in the left-hand menu, there will be a menu item for "Linking Instructions."

In your case, here's the URL you can cut-and-paste as a shortcut:

Thank's again.

I think I keep the one visible link in my frontpage, as an
example (or as an advertisment), and then spread these
hidden links across my other pages. I am currently explaining
this thing on a Finnish discussion board, and I hope that I can
recruit more people to the project.

You Finns are coming on strong! Just a few days ago there were less than 20 who were members of the Project, now there are hundreds and you're already the fourth most represented nation! Check out a new page we just put up:

http://www.projecthoneypot.org/more.php

Whatever you're doing, it seems to be working! Those Canadians in the audience need to start rallying the troops or the Finns are going to overtake you..... :-)

Thanks for all the help!
