Why bother with a blog plug in?

hi,

I notice that there is a plugin for the Movable Type blogging system.

I use a PHP based system myself (http;//www.pivotlog.net) and would be happy to write a generic plugin for PHP based blogs ...

but first I would like to uderstand what the great beenfit of such a plugis is...

Surely it would be enough to place an invisible link to the honeypot page in each post? But the MT plugin is much more complicated than that. Any idea what it is doing?

If I can understand why such a thing is desirable, I will code it.
