The following is taken from my error log, not my access log, just because it's easier to spot there.
What happens is this. I have an IP blocked (in this case because I blocked an entire telecom, though that's irrelevant). The blocked IP shows up just once, trying to access a particular URL and gets a "forbidden" response for its efforts..
One second later Google apparently goes after the same URL and gets a "not found" response for its efforts.
(That's why I pick this up easily in the error log.)
This happens frequently and involves Microsoft URLs just as often as Google URLs.
What I'm curious about is whether Google and Microsoft search engines are being enlisted to get around IP blocking. Is that what's going on here? What if Google's access produced a "found" condition rather than a "not found"? Has the blocked IP then made an end run around .htaccess?
Or is this something else entirely?
