How does PH help in the fight against spammers?
Author: A.Universitian   (23 Aug 14 12:27pm)
Hello,

I looked at FAQ but I might have missed this basic staff.

Is Project Honey Pot basically a database for spammers?

Am I wrong to expect PH to automatically stop those spammers using spammer-IP addresses using my site? (I have a honeypot page).

Basically my expectation was that PH stop anyone using one of those IP addresses in PH database from using my site.

So far it did not effect the spammers on my site, despite the fact that I have reported all. Even if several of them are "reported as content spammers but probably clean now". Basicly I do not care if they are clean now (BTW they are not clean as they are still spamming), and I do not care if they are temporarily slaved by spammers (owners should have been more careful). I just want to block them. How can I do it?

Regards.
p.s. ı might sound negative but tired of deleting those spammer content from Romanian IP addresses on our site...

Yes you are "wrong to expect PH to automatically stop those spammers" Installing a honeypot and hidden link to your honeypot through out your webpages helps identify spammers and harvesters of email addresses getting their IP addresses added to the Honey Pot database _of_ spammers.

The honeypot will not prevent any IP from visiting one of your webpages. To do that you need to install/add some code to use the HTTP:BL which utilizes the database.

Your expectations are not based on the first FAQ
What is Project Honey Pot?
"Project Honey Pot is a distributed network of decoy web pages website administrators can include on their sites in order to gather information about robots, crawlers, and spiders. We collate data on harvesters, spammers, dictionary attackers, and comment spammers. We make this data available to our members in order for them to protect their websites and inboxes."

Note the last sentence. "We make this data available to our members in order FOR THEM TO PROTECT their websites and inboxes."

Just one user to another. Hope this helps your understanding
